    Though maybe a Scot might.

    Jock's right (as usual).

By the way, the OP isn't and wasn't a Marine.

If the Marine was wearing his boots to an evening formal function and he asked me for advice, then I (as Jock Scot also said) would advise and assist him.

I certainly hope a Marine wouldn't wear his or her boots to a formal function where dress blues are the uniform of the day! Oh Lord!

Well, as part of the fairly sizeable Marine contingent here on XMarks, let me thank you for your service, both as a soldier and a diplomat!

I'm not a Marine. I was army way back when and a diplomat now. Overseas, we love our MSG and the ball is typically the biggest embassy event of the year. I can't say Semper Fi, but i can wish you a very happy birthday!

As a retired US diplomat, I have to chime in to agree with Lassmanac. The Marine Ball is at the very top of the Embassy's social calendar, whichever US Embassy it might be. Semper Fidelis and Happy Birthday to the Marines!
