Pipers hose usually have what is referred to as "popcorn tops" which are thick hose tops with a very distinctive pattern . Kilt tops, I think, are also known a hose toppers which are knitted to go over your hose cuffs. They can be knitted in whatever design you like. Kilt hose are the whole sock that you buy from vendors in a variety of quality, and knit design. Someone maybe able to post pics of the styles you asked about.

Times were that if you played in a pipe band (be it competition, parade, performance or street band) you wore snow white hose; no ifs, ands or buts! I don't know what happened, but about 10 years ago popcorn tops came into fashion so wearing snow white didn't seem quite as bad. Well, about 5 years ago, maybe a bit longer, some of the grade 1 bands at the Worlds started wearing other colors and the trend caught on. So now, snow white is sort of rare. Pros & cons? Well, white shows off the detailing in the gillies & flashes really well, but they're a bugger to keep clean! AND, you didn't have to think about what you were going to wear, because everything was white or off white. Along the same lines, every jacket & vest were black . . . same formal look and very nice looking, but very cookie cutter and kind of boring.
Nowadays we've got so many colors to choose from that you almost need a fashion consultant to make it look right. I have to admit I still like the uniform/issued stuff, because you don't have to think about what goes with what. The nicest part is, the colored hose are so much easier to take care of and the color selection is better than it's ever been. If you're still in a quandary, make a trip down to your local craft store and pick yourself up a color wheel and start comparing/contrasting. IMHO, a pair of forest green hose would really look great with a predominantly purple kilt. Heather up in the highlands as inspiration and all. Yeah, silly me, eh?
