Nowt wrong with white socks. They aren't particularly my cup of tea but they work well on anyone who likes them. Our mate Derek from South Wales wears white socks all the time in a casual way and his kit looks fine to me.

They go well with the laces of his casual "brogues". Just kidding - he looks great and is obviously his own man!

I have a couple pair of white kilt socks, but they're usually worn with hiking boots.

I don't often wear my white kilt hose anymore, but they are not hideous. If she was kind enough to think of you and pick out a gift with more meaning and thought behind it than a simple gift card then I would by all means wear them. If you want to offset the white of the hose wear coloured flashes. A white shirt collar sticking out from a nice sweater always looks good to my eye. Next year you can wear your coloured hose, but this year definitely the white ones.

Nothing like off white hose to highlight your flashes if a dark kilt ! Never know when you may want them !
