I like the claret hose, especially with a Christmas tie and white shirt for the purple kilt. For pub and sporting events when I wear my Heritage of Scotland, I go with purple, navy, ancient blue, or black. For a Christmas party though, claret or red to give it some zing. I see that some have suggested the mustard/red and red/mustard hose. Could be nice, especially if your tie has green, red, and gold.

Correct me if I'm wrong but here's how I choose hose for a Highland outfit.
I lay my kilt aside. I don't even look at it.
I choose a shirt.
I choose any other garment (tie, jumper, et cetera).
I choose my leathers.
That's it. Not much fuss. Not much trouble.
Think of how jeans are worn. Usually they are in the blue (or black) spectrum. Do we usually match to our Levis?

Well... I admit, I usually wear black jeans with my clerical shirts . . . .
