Goodbye to Biscuit "Boo" Hound, 2000-2013

Thanksgiving morning we said goodbye to Biscuit "Boo" Hound, 2000-2013.
A faithful and loyal beast, Biscuit was a reliable guardian and a sweet and caring doggie. She served as a snuggling caretaker when you were ill ("Paging Dr. Boo, Dr. Biscuity Boo - please pick up a white courtesy bone"), and - ever a blues hound - heartily sang along with perfect pitch and a resonant voice whenever she heard a harmonica wail.
She proudly kept watch over her dog pack of three buddies with a fair but firm stance, ruling with an Iron Paw when necessary. She loved apple slices, peanut butter and pizza crusts, and believed she was the mommy of every stuffed animal in the world.
Biscuit loved the holidays; we called her "Christmas Boo" as December rolled around. She loved the decorations, getting excited when the boxes were pulled out. She was fond of the Nutcracker doll, and would spend hours gazing at the twinkling lights on the tree. The unwrapping of presents would find her with an enormous grin, waiting on a treasured bone to appear.
She had the most soulful deep brown eyes, and was a patient, earnest listener who could offer wise counsel. She didn't have much of a tail, but could wiggle energetically enough that you always knew when she was pleased with the world. She would often lie next to the couch and raise a paw in the air, insisting that someone hold hands with her for long periods.
Home from the hospital, she spent a quiet last evening at home, surrounded by her pack and her family and getting lots of love, pets and ear rubs.
Ever brave, she was still wagging in the morning, if a bit more subdued than the great bounding beast we loved so much for so long. She took one last stroll in the warm sunshine in our backyard, sniffing at the breeze and surveying her domain, and then peacefully went to sleep in my wife's lap.
We'll miss you, dear Boo. You are such a good dog, always.

Having lost the most loyal friends that anyone could ever have, I feel your loss, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Rest assured that Boo will be waiting for you at Rainbrow Bridge.

Always very sad; dogs are wonderful friends. They never criticize and they're always glad to see us. Unconditional love. I've sometimes preached that it's why "Dog" is "God" spelled backwards. Long explanation, but I'm sure you'll understand.

Alas, in my line of work, I often deal with people who have had a beloved pet cross the Rainbow Bridge. The emotions run the gamut from sadness to relief that the pet is no longer living in pain. But I've found this poem a help to some.

So sorry to hear of your loss. She looks like a big dog, you were very lucky to have her for 13 years (all that good love and care helps)
Never having children myself (I have been a school bus driver for 34 years......) I have always had dogs. I have a special connection with them that I don't have with people, or even horses for that matter. When you lose a dog that has been such a big part of your life, in a way, you never get over them. I am still mourning my wolfhound and it's been over a year.
Christmas will be melancholy for you family. How are the other dogs doing?
