    Worsted and Twill

Worsted and Twill. I know it sounds like some cheesy double act from the 50's.

They are things you see all the time when looking at kilts and fabrics. What are they (I take them for granted)

    What do the mean?

whats the difference ? is there one ?

    Please can anyone tell me....David

    Hi David,

In simplistic terms, worsted is a medium-weight fabric made from wool. Twill, in kiltmaking parlance, is usually associated with a heavier cotton fabric. Although the latter is actually the name given to a particular type of weave in the manufacturing process.

as hamish said it is about a different manner to make the reef knots from the tartan. while worsted wool is a finer and more expensive weaving mill, twill looks a bit coarser, ruder. twill usually was used during the world wars, benefiting from its robustness. jeans for example are also made in the twill manner.

i got one kilt made from twill wool and i m as happy as with my worsted wool ones. the difference is as suggested granted and both hold their pleats perfectly. i wouldn´t mind about the difference as it is quite minimalistic.

considered that twill means in german "drillich" and wool is "wolle" you could see pics from both weavings on this page, sorry that it s in german, but just the pics there...

@hamish: as i m in search of a really heavy kilt like more than 20 oz, would u say they are made all from twill? does anybody know where to find those kilts?

    regards

    Hi Mcnice,

Slightly tricky one, this! You do not say whether you want a tartan kilt, or just "a kilt". The heaviest tartan I have come across, used for Military kilts, was 19ozs, but I dare say you might be able to track down a heavier twill fabric, though it may not be in wool (or tartan!).

For practical reasons, I have never tried to locate a kilt fabric for myself that was heavier than 16ozs, so I regret I am unable to point you in any positive direction for a 20ozs plus.

Possibly the longer established, traditional kiltmakers who have made for the military in the past, might be able to assist. However, there cannot be much demand for such a weight in civilian circles nowadays, and the fabric might have to be especially woven for you ....... pricey!!

Yes, I think you'll find that 16oz is pretty much standard for men's kilts from the traditional Scottish kiltmakers thesedays. Obviously, other weights are available, but you might not find the tartan you really want as all are not produced in all the regular weights.

It looks like a second-hand kilt from Ebay could be your best route to take - but look out for Military or Ex-Military kilts, not civilian ones.

Good luck - and keep us informed of your progress.

The thing I've noticed about ex-military kilts is you better be fairly lean to find one that fits. That's why I suggested What Price Glory. Their reproductions are made to fit those of us with a bit of a spread.
