Are these real tartans?

And if real, than what are they?

My first stab in the dark would be that they are real tartan as in warp and weft is the same.
BUT they don't seem to be registered (as far as I can see).

First one: looks a lot like a variation on Black Watch.
Second one: no clue there.

The first is a set of sheets and the second is a pair of lounge pants. I picked them because.of the colors.

The first is a "real" tartan. It is a 42nd Royal Regiment derivation famed from Kenneth MacLeay's "Colin Campbell" portrait. Wilsons were weaving this sett although I don't believe it is included in the 1819 KPB. This particular thread count seems a bit off, but that may be the image.

The second is Stewart / Stuart in Government color way.

It's actually not authentic Black Watch (government sett), nor Black Watch (Aljean). It's very similar, and there are lots and lots of fashion "plaid" designs out there which are meant to fool the eye into looking like Black Watch. But if you look closely at the thin black lines in the green fields, none of the Black Watch variants (that I could find, anyway) have double lines in the green. They always have a single black line centered in the green. The first photo in the OP, though, has alternating single and double lines in the green. I don't see any Black Watch variants, even fashion ones, that have this. Although there may be one out there I haven't seen yet.

Not sure of the second one, either. I have a set of flannel sheets that look very similar to it. Likely just another fashion plaid.

D'oh, you're right! While there may be some variation in thread count/stripe width, it does appear that the pattern is the same.

It is only the "Aljean" if the darkest color is another color blue. If not, it is 42nd Regiment with a hinky thread count. The 42nd sett does not include what D.C. Stewart termed the "Black Watch" motif.

As for the Stewart / Stuart in the Government color way: Almost all Tartanology scholars, incl. D.C. Stewart, James D. Scarlett, P.E. MacDonald, M.A.C. Newsome, et al recognize the "Government Regiment" sett foundation as blue / black / green.
