They are worn on the forearms. They were originally a form of armor commonly made from leather or iron. They are a very popular costume piece for Ren Faires and other costumed events.

I have one of these, or something similar, which I use to protect the arm from the string when shooting a long bow. However, these look much more impressive that mine!

I have several bracers left over from my re-enactment days. one difference between bracers and archery arm guards is the archery ones are often plain and un-armoured. I have seen an archer use a lovely pair of bracers with engraved brass plates. Only problem was when the string caught on one of the plates, cut the string and sent the arrow off to the side. The ones you've got your son wouldn't have caused problems like this for the guy...
