Richard, you're so lucky in all those 40 years to never have had a problem with a sporran belt, particularly of the chain variety. I was unfortunate, in my early kilted years (not that long ago, really), to have bought a cheap sporran belt, probably from the far east, and it had burrs on it which did some damage to my acrylic kilts, and even my tank. Besides the burrs, it flaked chrome all over. What a mess that was. So, I now go with a quality leather sporran strap.
