I know this is back to a diversion from the proper topic of this thread, but I can't resist.
I've been chuckling for the last hour or so at the across-the-pond differences in language, and particularly, the difference in the term "cottaging." Actually, that does coordinate and cross over in the discussion, with the wide range of terms for "hunting", "shooting" and other variations here,
...at least with some fellows who refer to "pony-tail hunting."
*Sigh* Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I do beg your forgiveness. ![Offtopic](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/offtopic.gif)
Okay, NOW back to your regularly scheduled programme.

In my department at work, comprised of several hundred, guesstimating 200 men, we have 5 men who put on a kilt last Tartan Day, which I admit is probably high for the general population. We had 17 kilt-wearers in the agency as a whole, which would be very roughly .5 percent. it is likely that there are kilt wearing men who either did not get the message, or chose not to wear the kilt to work in a fairly conservative organization.
I never was much good at math.
We have a male population of about 158 million in the US. I was suggesting that there are probably not more than 150,000 kilt wearers, including bandsmen and those who just wear a kilt once or maybe twice a year. I'd be very happy to know that number is low, but since I see many of the same faces at the various games, festivals, parades and dinners, I doubt there all that many of us.
You are lucky to have so many at your agency. At mine there were only 3 that I knew of: me, a piper, and a Scot on an exchange tour with us, and I was the only one who wore a kilt to work. For us that was less than 1 per 1000.

Lots of guys will have a dog with them for hunting, especially a retriever if they are hunting ducks, but I don't think anyone hunts with packs of dogs.
Bear hunters do. 'Coon hunters hunt with (and sometimes for) at least one dog, and up to three, especially if there's a good-hunting dog that can teach younger dogs how to follow a trail, preferably silently. "coon and 'possum hunting is done at night, by the way, as both those mammals are nocturnal.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled kilt statistics thread...

I live in the greater Sacramento area of Northern California with a population of about 2 million. I wear a kilt all the time. In my area I don't even need two hands to count the number of folks I have witnessed who also wear a kilt on a regular basis. Now that is just eye witness reporting.

Hello All!
Thanks Jock for starting such an interesting thread.
I won't try to hazard a guess on the ratio of of kilt wearers on the whole but stay within my area. The population of the town I live in is approximately 15,000 and aside from the annual Runnin' O' the Green on St. Patricks' Day I know of one possibly two part time kilt wearers and myself who wears the kilt 98 percent of the time. So that's 3 in 15,000. I'll be sure to ask my wife if she has seen or is aware of others here.
Perhaps some of the vendors aside from Steve would care to chime in with their observations.
Thanks again for the interesting topic Jock!

The population of Australia is about 23,000,000 of which 9% claim scottish ancestry. From personal observations at games and other venues my guesss would be one in 1 in 200,000

I was wondering about this as well. I wore my kilt yesterday, and ran into a young guy in a solid black wool kilt, other than him (and realising the thread relates to tartan kilts), I have seen three people in eight years. One punk guy who lived in the neighbourhood a few years ago wore his kilt a lot, and a couple of well dressed gents in the city that I saw once. Other than that, the only kilted folk I've seen were Scots who visited when the Lions toured. So I would hazard a guess at one in 500000 in Melbourne at best. I live in the inner city, so Mike's estimate may be accurate for those who live further out, and also, I don't attend Highland Games and other "Scottish" themed events, which may skew my perception.
I get stared at, but rarely rude comments, so I would assume that people have seen a man in a kilt before, but it's extremely rare.
Interesting thread!
Cheers,
Cameron
