BBC Scotland showed some live shots from Stonehaven as part of its Hogmanay coverage. It is still available on BBC iplayer.

Plenty of information is available at http://www.stonehavenfireballs.co.uk/about

Thanks for the Stonehaven article. In it they describe stopping at the homes of friends and relatives, and it reminded me of how much has changed. As a child both Christmas and New Year were effectively moving street parties as you popped in to greet your friends and relatives, had a drink and some food, then on to the next. I have not seen this in a long time and attribute the loss of traditions like this to urbanization and mobility. Now people are less and less likely to live close to people they know, and some even live in fear of their neighbours. Traditions like this one must be encouraged to flourish, to keep alive important values of neighborliness and community.
