    AC:
After my regular military service I became a proud Merchant Mariner as well, following in the wake of a long family tradition. By way of example for color use and heraldry, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (located at King's Point, New York) does have a registered tartan; Scottish Tartans Authority # 7749, seen below. The specific heraldry of the colors is interesting and well thought out. While I am not an Academy graduate (my cousin was), I have also thinking about designing a tartan for Mariners and was pondering asking the Academy if they would be OK with using their base tartan with the exclusion of the parts that are specific to the Academy itself. Perhaps replace the maroon with gold, representing the officers stripes on the dress uniform.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas, brother.

From the Scottish Tartans Authority website.
    "Designed by
Michael Miller of the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York State. The tartan comprises four colors, each with special significance to the Academy. The tartan's primary fields are the Academy's school colors, in shades of Ocean Blue and Haze Grey. The intervening squares of the pattern take on a blue-grey tone, suggesting the storm clouds of World War II, when the Academy was born. Crossing the grey are bands of maroon, representing the Battle Standard (battle flag) and the valor and sacrifice of "The 142". 142 Midshipmen who perished during World War II, the only federal academy to send its students into battle. The US Merchant Marine Academy is the only federal academy entitled to display a battle standard, which signifies duty in war. The primary color of the Academy's battle standard is maroon. Gold is also present, representing Officers or military. Woven sample from Strathmore."

Upon reviewing this thread I discovered that I somehow skipped completely past the page where you and Steve already mentioned your awareness of the USMMA tartan. Sorry about the duplication. All the best with your efforts. I am interested to see the end result.
