Clan Septs explained and Langton Tartan

Hello the rabble. I am hosting many burns nights this year. One is an informal small household kilted gathering. I wanted to give each guest a bit of information about their clan (Burns, Lamont, Gordon, Butler) I am struggling to find anything connected with Langton. I am after some information about this clan or any Septs associated with it. As ever what better place to come.

    Thank you folks.

Some quick research came up with this:

The only connection to a clan that I could find was Clan Cockburn. If I find anymore, I will put it up here. Cheers

Not finding anything in my references to a Clan Langton or that it is a sept of any clan. It appears to be a place name of English origins. The Cockburn connection seems to be of the town of Langton in the borders. Check the Surname Database for some history of the name

    Indeed.
Nowadays spelt as "Longtown", the first town you will come to in England after you have crossed the Border out of Scotland on the A7 road.
    This from wiki:-
Longtown is a small town in northern Cumbria, England, with a population of around 3,000. It is in the parish of Arthuret and on the River Esk, not far from the Anglo-Scottish border......

That's because like the majority of Scottish, as opposed to Highland names, it was not a clan nor sept of any.

Dr. Phil Smith in his book "Tartan for Me" suggests that folks with the surname Langton don the Tweedside District tartan. There are two shown on the Scottish Register of Tartans. Perhaps the ancestors of the Langton guests at your gathering hail from that part of Scotland.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
