    Kilted in the Bible Belt.

I had not yet shared my Kilted experiences with you all while on my last trip.

While Kilted in Greenville, SC , the buckle of the bible belt here in the US.

My Kilting Greenville actually began in the restroom of a McDonalds on Wade Hampton ave. Just before meeting with Dr. Dougy. I went in there to get rid of the tubes around my legs and change shirts. As I left really no reactions from the male employee who was on a break and we exchanged a few nicities.

All was well I cruised downtown to meet Dr. Dougy and had a nice long converstion about kilts, and other things with him on the street in front of the civil war museum. Some time during our visit his dog got a litle nosy and...

Ole Dr. Dougy said " The dog is trying to bite your Skirt" As I left, I told Dr.Doug I was not promising to NOT tell on him at X....

Well then I went to a BiLo Super Market to get some victuals ( pronounced "Viddles") to eat before heading up to the mountains. On my way out a young guy selling photo sessions complimented me on the Kilt. then as I walked out the door, I got acosted..... Got your attention didn't I right behind me was a young man that worked for the store heading out to retrieve grocery carts. He said " Wow! did you make that? That's cool Where can I get one, I've got to get one of those! I gave him an Amerikilt BC and and left as I watched him grasping the card as if it were gold and memorizing everything on it. I think we have a new young Kilter around the bend.

Then up to the mountains where I met several people. That environment causes no bad reactions to a man in a Kilt from what I can tell but maybe a few strange looks until you start talking with them and they realize you are as normal as they are. ( guess we fool them )

I met a lady from england and we discussed my kilt a bit. No compliment but no bad reaction for sure, It was just clothes on me as far as she was concrened and she thought it was a good Idea and of course I suggested to her husband standing there that if she ever fot him in one she would never get him out of it. He did not seem keen on the idea.

Another lady made mention of the fact that it was not a tartan. Still another American lady was well pleased and we talked about the comfort and colness, she asked a couple questions including the one we usally don't answer and then said something like women are wanting to get out of skirts and men want to wear them as she laughed. I said yeh women are stupid for giving this up.. She was wearing slacks and she agreed.. I suggested she buy one for her husband.

Well this long I had many positive reactions or none at all on the trip, I will be back down there in a couple weeks. Hopefully My kilt will be back from Amerikilt before I go.

I want to tell you what happened in a clothing store in another post...

    In my defense

I was in a lot of pain that day and not thinking well. Doggy loves to go after wife's skirts. Brain made reflexive statement without proper cogitative skills engaged. (Autopilot) I have stated the words so many times that it just sort of rolled out again. I swear, it's like saying "God Bless You" after a sneeze....

    Still feels stupid.

    Still feels embarassed.

Still replays moment in long list of embarassing life blunders that roll by in moments where I am bored and brain decides to taunt me.

In other news, it was really nice meeting JohnAllen. He's a great guy.

I am dyslexic, I stutter and mix words. Most embarassing moment ever... Was when I was a kid and tried to say "May I show you to a seat" to a very nice looking lady during an open house in school. What came out of my mouth was "May I sew you to a sheet." That got me suspended for a whole month. That "lady" was the school super's wife.

I always like to hear the two different versions of the same story, it does my heart well, especially if the two are my kilted brethern (or soon to be kilted) here on the forum.

Glad that you two got together!

Great story John, I love to read stuff like that, better than reading the newspaper!

glad you met up with Dr.Doug, I envy you guys, I'm too far away to meet anyone here from Xmarks.

John did you expect different reactions in the "Bible Belt" than anywhere else?

I also live in Tasmania's Bible belt, I get mostly very positive responses.

Glad you got out of "tubes" even if it was in McJunk's.

I wore shorts to a job today, first time in a couple of weeks, it was strange having to remember to zipper up and feeling something tight around my legs, not pleasant at all.

I wore shorts the other day as well and it DID feel strange. I consider myself practical and not driven by any particular mandates to remain persistently unbifurcated, so I toss on pants and shorts as the situation dictates. That said, it isn't often that I find myself in a situation where I am not wearing a kilt. When it does happen, it always makes me appreciate how nice my kilts are to wear. Karen (wife) also seems to like the brief change in my "look".

I suppose that it is sort of like the old saw about how you have to leave your house on occasion in order to appreciate how nice it is to be home.

    Mychael,

As I have said before, it sure is great to have the choice. Isn't it?
