The simple answer is charcoal grey. It will go with anything and can be dressed up more than some of the earth tones.

As has been said,
A Charcoal like this
![](http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b144/TheWizardofBC/jackets/DSC02037.jpg)
Or a Brown like this.

I don't however try to choose my jacket color based on my Tartan. Either of these will go well with any Tartan.
I think we need to get away from this thinking that just because we choose to put a kilt on in the morning that our entire outfit must now be built around the colors in the Tartan. The kilt is very capable of standing on its own. That is one of the beauties of Tartan. It can go with just about anything.
I could swap either of these kilts with either of these jackets and it would still look 'right'.
If you go to a wedding where kilts are worn you will probably see the same jacket, shirt, tie, hose and shoes on all the guys. But each may be wearing their own Tartan. And it still works.
I would prefer we start to choose our accessories based on what works best with the widest range of circumstances. Ladies have known and used this 'rule' for many years. Choose a jacket that you can mix and match with the most other items in your closet. Choose based on how many different "looks" you can create from just a few items.
This not only makes good fashion sense it makes the best economic sense too.

Charcoal is certainly a "safe" colour. As would be a lighter tweed that has a grey overall effect (like mine shown below). Even though the actual threads are white, brown, and green, it blends to grey from a distance. Tweed is funny that way; it can take on different colours depending on lighting and what it's paired with. But tweeds that look grey from a distance tend to go with anything, despite the actual thread colours used.
But honestly, I think brown is a better choice. Anything from a light tan to a dark brown would work equally well. And be so much more visually interesting than a grey shade.

Personally, I'd go with a dark brown/light brown/tan based tweed with or without a check, windowpane, or herringbone pattern. Brown tweeds tend to work well with almost any tartan in any colour scheme. See the photos of yours truly (the first several photos) and other examples below.

Also, here are a few photos of my good mate, Donald Mackintosh of Newtonmore (wearing the Mackintosh tartan, obviously). As you can see, he prefers to wear a tweed jacket and waistcoat in a medium-brown tweed with a subtle, burnt orange windowpane pattern. I always think he looks quite smart and he's also a remarkable piper.

The jackets you see in my post are a Freedom Kilts exclusive. They are made to my specifications by a small company in the UK. These guys are real, old school cutters. They do not use patterns, preferring to mark and cut each jacket individually.
Since I introduced the idea of a jacket cut for the kilt, that was something other than the standard Argyle, some others have begun to offer similar ideas.
We carry this jacket in the Charcoal. in stock sizes in our shop. If a customer does not fit into a stock size this jacket can be made from a set of measurements.
They may also be made from a range of over 35 different fabrics including baratheas, tweeds, windowpanes, and solids.
