In my twenties I put nearly 120,000 miles on a Gold Wing motorcycle, in a span of 3 years. My friends put barely 2,000 - 6,000 miles on theirs, in the same time. At the end of the 3 years (when I traded it for another bike), theirs still had a showroom spit & polish look, and had only had the oil changed once or twice. Though I never abused the finish of my bike, I never obsessed over it, either. I enjoyed my motorcycle year 'round, touring all over, while theirs sat in their heated garage, unused.
I wouldn't worry about the tassels. They look fine.
