I guess I'm in the minority here, in that I prefer Chains. But I was very careful in choosing one, rejecting two with tiny burrs on the links or overly sharp clips. I'd certainly echo Rocky's comments too.

Though I have always adored this sporran and chain strap ensemble for Highland day attire:

This is my approach as well. I've recently purchased two good-quality leather straps--one black, one medium brown--specifically for sport/casual and "dress-casual"/day wear. I also agree that with kilt-wear matters there are few finer templates than the Duke Of Rothesay.

on a side note, say you had a black and tan/brown sporran - would you want a black or brown/tan sporran belt (assuming not a chain of course)? Or should I try making a black/tan belt to go with the sporran?

You are over thinking this now, just pick a black, or, brown strap and get on with it.

Actually, it's fairly well established in Traditional Civilian Highland Dress that if you're wearing a black/tan/brown sporran, the proper sporran belt is one made of zebra hide with rhinestone studs. That's a fact, and I'm sure Jock Scot will back me up on it.

Should the stripes run horizontally along the length? Or are they cut "on the bias"?
