My first sporran was made in 1950 and is from A&J Scott and co. it was my fathers sporran and it came with a leather strap. Both the sporran and the strap continue to work just fine. When I started buying other sporrans I made a few sporran straps in leather for day wear. The only time I use a sporran chain is for Formal wear.

I have one chain that I've never worn (it came with a sporran). I have one black strap (for my black sporran which, like Jock Scot, I wear for all but the most formal of events) and one brown strap that goes with my brown sporran (which I seldom wear anymore as I see less and less need to own two sporrans, muchless two kilts).
Also, as mentioned above, I axtually wear my sporran with the buckle in line with mu kilt buckles. Makes much more sense, looks more streamlined, and doesn't damage seats (my car has leather so that's a no-no).

They should be diagonal, running the same direction as the stripes on one's regimental/university tie. Obviously.

OH no they should not! Goodness gracious me Tobus, after all this time I should have thought that you would have known that!

I've thought of all the things that people will say about a man in a kilt. Believe me there are a lot of them in my neck of the woods (land of big trucks and even bigger tires). But I never thought about the kinky side!

I wear beveled leather strap with day wear and a smooth, high quality chain with evening wear.

I'm also a chain guy. I've never had a problem with it damaging a kilt. Make sure you get a good one, and you'll have no problems!

I never thought about that side either ... until I realized what I had just typed in the first sentence ! Thus my humor and clarification !

This has been an interesting and informative read. The leather strap vs. chain strap is so much like the conventional oil vs. synthetic oil. discussions on auto forums.
