    Dude comes from the Scottish word "duddies"

    I use the word "dude" way too much I will admit. I didn't think about the origins of the word until I saw this article:

    Uh, I don't buy it. "Duds" yes, "dude" no.

    We forget sometimes that the early US had a large German and Dutch population, and to this day we say gesundheit when somebody sneezes and we send our kids to kindergarten and we eat cookies and have a boss at work.

    Doedel means 'fool' and appears in Yankee Doodle; it's also spelt dudel and was shortened to 'dude' meaning an ignorant citydweller out of his element visiting the country; a Dude Ranch caters to such. How it became the standard word for 'fellow' or 'guy' in Southern California I don't know.
