contrasting
I would say if you are wearing a darker colour jacket on top of your kilt, you might want to look for contrasting hose. So if the jacket is a dark blue, you might look for green or a lovat shade of hose. Dark hose matching a dark tartan kilt and dark jacket would wind up being, let's say, a bit "dark".
In addition, since kilts and jackets tend to be fairly expensive and therefore harder to switch out, a variety of different hose can allow you change the look of an outfit quite easily and economically. I'm fairly new at this but I find myself reaching for different coloured hose more and more frequently.
Hope this helps.

Brick red, tartan red, claret, Lovat green, ancient green, tartan green, Lovat Blue, St. Andrew's Blue, and ancient blue are my votes (various House of Cheviot hose colours).

Mustard would work, but not the easiest color to find.

So the correct answer is go out and buy up a rainbow of colors of kilt hose and traditional garter ties then play around with the possibilities. That's the fun part of kilting.
Whoever thought guys like us would turn into fashion color coordinators - and CARE about it! Just amazing the power of kilts...our ladies must still be giggling! Choosing colors to put the "outfit" together for the day is a sober high....enjoy.

For the tartan in the original post, I think grey would be a great option. Although others would look good also.
Although I don't own any brown hose, as I just never thought of them with my kilts, I really like the way they look with the R'lyeh set.

We share a colour palette. My Lamont tartan has a white stripe over a black watch base. My wife did not like the ancient blue hose that I originally bought to wear with my kilt. (photos - http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...dern-kilt-7886 )
She was a big fan of navy hose, which I now wear frequently, and I have a burgundy/claret pair of hose that I wear from time to time, depending on what I am wearing on top. I have actually been surprised how hard it is to find a colour of hose I really like. If you poke though the thread I have started you will find photos, mostly with the navy hose.
My next purchases will probably be a lovat green or bottle green hose. I think they may work.

My standard go to hose for every occasion, Oatmeal. Works with just about every tartan! I'm not sure about for dressier events, but everything below "formal" functions, they are great! Red garter ties would go smashingly to add just a splash of color that also compliments your Armstrong tartan. Cheers and may you enjoy the quality of a USA Kilt's Kilt.

For my XMTS kilt, I have grey hose, and dark blue hose. I also have dark blue flashes and gold flashes. generally go grey / dark blue or blue / gold, but I am thinking of mixing the grey hose with the gold flashes and see how that works out. I know I have pictures somewhere but not on this computer. I usually wear the grey hose with the XMTS kilt as I think the blue ones while nice looking, bring too much blue into the look.

Brown hose would be my suggestion. Anything from a tan or khaki (greenish tint) to a darker brown like bison. You'd be surprised how good brown hose can look with a dark coloured kilt in blue/green shades.

That's a good point, Tobus. Colours like bracken, bison, dark loden, and as you mentioned, a tan/khaki would also look well and contrast quite nicely with this particular tartan.
