Great article on tweed
There is a great article at gentlemensgazette.com called Tweed Guide-the curiously compelling story of tweed. It traces the history and lays out the different types and how to co-ordinate tweed in one's wardrobe. Some of the comments following the article are very illuminating. I found it fascinating as I have picked up 10 tweed jackets at charity shops in Ontario and Michigan and now understand more about the range and types of tweed found in these jackets.

I agree with you, an interesting article, and worth the read. I stumbled across it last October while searching for something else.
I emailed it to our daughter-in-law, when she asked for suggestions for Christmas ideas for our son. The lucky kid, ended up with a very nice tweed jacket under the tree.

Until perhaps a year ago, I always thought of tweed as being an old mans material. But I have changed my mind since then, especially recently. I need a new tweed jacket but don't like the argyll/crail style, I think its the heavy cuffs, epaulettes and scalloped pocket flaps that put me off. So I have been thinking about my options including converting a nicely cut non-kilt tweed jacket. Then last week I walked into Campbell & Co in Beauly. It was like taking a step back in time, wooden floors, shelving, rolls of tweed everywhere in various weights. "No sir, we don't have any jackets you can see, they are all bespoke, made here on the premises. Yes you can have any style, any tweed and any lining. A straight pocket flap will be no trouble, etc, etc, etc." As we are all aware, this type of product, not to mention craftsmanship does not come cheaply. However, the Wife did not say "no way". She did say "buy cheap, buy twice" and "it would last a lifetime". Equally, she did not say "go ahead and get one". I suppose I just need to justify the cost to myself, get the Wife something to sweeten the deal, and shift a pound or ten, and keep it off.

Lovely little village and great looking store. isnt the internet fantastic for finding this sort of place sitting in my living room in Missouri. I think that town will be on our agenda when we next plan a trip to Scotland in 2015. Save the money now.. save the money now....
