Thank you sir. I did not know about the button designation. We went with that style because it looks really sharp. (Hats off to the 3rd Guards) I hope we haven't stepped on any toes. I would gladly find a tailor to do straight line FD buttons on a blank front coat. Here is another option, but the longer coat really appeals to us.

Well, since you are talking about an 'Honor Guard' rather than a band, how about a photo of the department's current dress uniform? If there isn't one, then you have a bit more latitude. For example, kilt, hose, uniform shirt topped with a black or navy blue sweater (for cool weather), necktie and your choice of head cover (Balmoral or Glengarry) with either the department's issue cap badge or a generic Maltese Cross firefighter design.

The current class "A" is s long sleeve version of our short sleeve light blue shirts, ascot or tie, round service hat (Air Force style) and navy blue wool trousers with red and white stripes down the leg. We also have a red braided shoulder cord and white cotton gloves. LOTS of room for improvement.
We did get approval today and ordered our first batch.
-Kilts(firefighter memorial)
-glengarry with Maltese badge and hackle(red with white and a black one)
-black belts and silver buckle,
-black horse hair sporran with white tassels and Maltese badge(just to be a little different,
-black hose,
-white spats.
-And the always classy "military" safety kilt pin.
Also adding the white gauntlet gloves since we have no piper. Yet!
We will probably get the sweaters for the 8 really cold days we have here. I like that look too.

I'm going to resurrect this thread, since it's not too old... ![Very Happy](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
I'm working on a fire department band/honor guard uniform similar to the OP's. The easiest way for us to start is to use an Ike version of our Class A jacket (as suggested above by OC Richard), since we can get them in the same fabric from the same manufacturer that we currently use.
My question is: belt over the jacket or no belt at all?
FWIW, wearing the belt even with the bottom hem of the jacket (covering up the bottom button in front) would put the belt at about "normal" kilt belt height.

Thanks!

I would go with the belt but perhaps go with the white belt worn by many military units. When I was a kid my brother was a firefighter and they wore white belts with their parade uniforms. By the time I joined that tradition had gone away, but I always thought they looked sharp at a summer parade.
One note about the Ike jacket and fire department uniforms. Ike jackets usually have pockets on the chest and epaulettes on the shoulders, two features that are generally missing from fire department class A uniforms. I like the epaulettes as it gives you some place to hang an arm cord from, but the pockets have always looked odd to me.
When I wore my kilt with my FD (I was the only member to do so) I wore a uniform sweater. That was also mostly because the jacket was expensive for the few times I would wear it. Most of the time in uniform I was in trousers.
When I was trying to get a more uniform look for the color guard at our Saint Andrews society, I wore a white uniform shirt, with society patches on the sleeve. I had a black sweater for that with the patches. I added a blue ascot and arm cord. However I only wore that uniform when I was the only one marching, as I could never convince anyone else to even have a uniform.

Just discovered this thread. Should anyone need a representative who can make face-to-face contact with Marlow White, I'll volunteer. The brick and mortar store is only a short drive away. I've been in a couple of times.

Great suggestions, AFS1970. I've worn a kilt with both the standard uniform shirt and/or the "commando" sweater, and either one looks really good. I hadn't considered a white belt. May have to look into that...
