The second and thiird photos are not of the Castlemaine Band, it's just that my mate was playing the base drum with them. It is in fact the Hill District Pipe Band The following are the Canberra City Pipe band who also double as the Australian Federal Police Pipe Band, hence the chequered bands in their headgear.

Of course nobody around here would know what 'wellies' means... they don't have them here (I wear flip flops 365 days a year, as do my kids).

    Thanks for the info!
And in Australia, Flip Flops are known as thongs (which might be as far as we might want to take the vagaries of the language !).

Hah! "Thongs" might be understood in that sense here, but usually refers to something quite different, as you suspect!

I used "flip-flops" out of deference to our non-American friends; I actually wear what we here call "sandals" but I think that word, in many places, conjures up an image of Ancient Roman-type footwear. Pretty much any open-toed things are called "sandals" here. Growing up we called flip-flops "zorries" here but nobody seems to use that term anymore.

Wow three bands in Full Dress... that just isn't seen at Games around here.

Great pics all of them ! Still nice to see bands in full dress , when I started Margate Pipes and Drums , the band I play in now , we did not like the white hose and brogues look so went for hosetops , spats and horsehair sporrans instead which we wear with short sleeve white shirts , we are moving in the direction of getting everyone else kitted out with doublets, plaids etc but its a slow process even if we are doing what we can to make our own doublets from lighter fabric , in 2 weeks I will be attending the South Coast Gathering and will post some pics if anyone is interested . Thanks once again for the thread
