It pays to help grandpa clean the garage
Hadn't seen this blanket since I was a little boy:
The thing is, I remember it being darker. So now I wonder if this is the same blanket that I knew about. The fact I know is that my great aunt went to Scotland many years ago (maybe even before I was born? Can't ask her now, sadly) and brought back a Buchanan tartan blanket. That's the one I saw at the very least 40 years ago. What I don't know is if this is that same one. I'll have to go rummage around some more.
But compared to the state of some of the things we found, I was thrilled to see this was in such good shape. It had been in a very well-sealed plastic tub. Not everything else fared so well. lol
These things may be a dime a dozen elsewhere (I have no idea how to gauge the quality - only that I love it for what it is and where it's been) but I was very happy to find it and since I was the one helping with the garage, Grandpa granted me dibs. My daughter was excited to find his old WWII footlocker - he had it in Okinawa among other places. My brothers can fight over a ceramic cat.

Nice find. But, keep your eye on that ceramic cat. It might be a "Maltese Falcon" in disguise.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

My father was stationed in Dunoon while in the US Navy. He brought home a matched set of Staffordshire spaniels for my grandmother. Wish I had them. Granted they looked ghastly, but a good, traditional sort of ghastly.

lol! I hope that's the case - there's tons of ceramic crap over there! I should go tell grandpa we're rich!

this is my favorite part:
The figures are also referred to as “comforters”; this is reputed to be because they could be bought outside of premises selling alcohol by husbands hoping to gain “comfort rather than conflict” from their wives.
And yep, that's the best kind of ghastly there is!

The value exceeds any monetary amount due to the fact that you place so much personal value to it. Family heirlooms have no price. Well, that and the fact that it is our beloved Buchanan Tartan increases it's value exponentially.
Enjoy.

Brilliant phrase! "...a good, traditional sort of ghastly".
I'll have to remember that...

My dear departed mother travelled to Scotland twenty years ago and brought back a comforter that I believe is Gordon and to me it is priceless! My mother,s favorite beverage was Dewers. My father said if he could convince my mom to drink a cheap scotch he could balance his budget! Regards Mattie

I used to watch "Cash In the Attic" when BBC America used to air it. It seemed every home they went in had a pair of Staffordshire dogs.

Just my 2¢ worth.
