I am a novice piper, now in my 4th year of lessons and 2nd year playing in a Grade V band. I often practise outside when at our cottage in PEI. Invariably people passing by on the path about 100m away stop to listen and other cottagers in the area frequently comment that they "thought they heard someone playing the pipes ...". I joke that I am good from far but far from good.

Here is a picture I have saved which seems to belong on this thread. I would love to be on that ketch listening to the pipes.

Heh, this reminds me of the episode of Hamish MacBeth called "Wee Jock's Lament", where they laid Wee Jock to rest atop the hill and TV John McIver played a lament on the pipes, with the townsfolk down below listening. It nearly brought a tear to my eye!

Yes, indeed, the volume of the pipes can be a problem at close quarters. Back when I was a naval reserve midshipman undergoing summer sea training many years ago, some of the crew of the small, WWII-vintage frigate I was on persuaded me to play a few jigs and reels on deck. Off-watch crew members crowded around to listen. I was well into the third or fourth tune, when I became aware of someone bellowing in my ear to stop. It was the XO and he was livid. Apparently, he had just broadcast a fire drill and none of those around me on deck had heard the order.
