    Casual kilts/navy tartan

I was curious what to wear with a casual style kilt. I have my fancy uber heavy kilt I bought in Scotland, but being a portly fellow (ok, I'm fat!) I'd just as soon not sweat to death. is I am buying a couple casual kilts-one in my tartan, and one in the US Navy tartan. I wear boots and a t-shirt with my utility kilt, but what is recommended for the casual, lighter kilts?

In researching, I found a closed thread regarding the USNavy tartan. I saw that the conversation revolved around submariners, radarmen, CTs and seabees about what style of tartan to wear. I fall into none of those categories, as I was a Navy musician (specifically French horn). What would be the best navy tartan to get?

(and where can I find a French horn themed kilt pin??)

The fact that you were in the Navy, regardless of your rating, you are more than qualified to wear the Edsell Navy tartan, it is not specific to any rank or rating. Unless you were attached to a submarine group I would stay away from the Polaris tartan.
Of course, neither the Edsell nor the Polaris tartans are officially recognized by the U.S. Navy

You may want to check out Sport Kilt....I have a Sport Kilt in US Navy Edzell.....love it...light weight .....added the traditional strap/buckle closure as well as their standard velcro closure.....and elastic at the back....and I opted for no fringe....a good looking casual kilt...and just add a button down dress shirt and tie....and you have a smart looking semi-dress kilt look....

I just ordered a 5 yard casual kilt from Scotweb with the US Navy tartan. They have the tartan available in 11 oz, 13 oz, and 15 oz weights.

Boots and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable with a casual kilt. I've seen sandals, sneakers, flip-flops, polo shirts, short sleeved button up shirts, dress shirts and ties, and everything in between with kilts.

From one navy vet to another, you might try Amazon.com for the kilt pin. I found this there and it looks like it would work as a kilt pin.

It is 1 1/2 inches but you might have luck just doing a search for it if you need something bigger.

I do fall into one of the categories that you mentioned and I have an Edsell Tartan kilt. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't wear it with pride as well. Heck, if non-military want to support the greatest fighting force in the world by wearing that tartan I say go for it. I have one made by USA kilts in their Semi-traditional configuration and it is super lightweight and comfortable in the heat. It is my go to for a hot day. Check them out. It was worth every penny.

Ive found wool (even 16 oz.) or poly cotton is better when the mercury climbs.
