I appreciate all of your recommendations. I have duly considered all the advice provided, as well as my own desires (and budget). I made a decision and pulled the trigger by ordering one of Rocky's X-rental 8 yard American Heritage Tartan 13 ounce tartan kilts from USA Kilts. I wanted to get the most kilt for my money, and while we could debate all of the many ways to do that for eons, I found this nice X-rental with 2 straps to be the one for me at this time.

I've read so many great things about Rocky's shop and I really love his American Heritage tartan, so it seemed like the right place for me to start from the beginning. Rocky was very helpful through a few email exchanges, and Lucas was a great sport by answering a lot of detailed questions during a couple of telephone conversations. I do tend to over-think things, so the answers I was provided regarding the construction, measurements, style, and other specifics really made me feel comfortable making the purchase.

The two key elements for my long term happiness will be determined by the following:
  • Gosh, I hope my measurements were right
    ...and...
  • I really hope I can keep off most of the 45 pounds I've lost since November.. maybe I 'll be able to lose a couple more.
Otherwise it's been a great experience getting all this help from X Marks, Rocky and his shop. The best news is since the kilt is already on the shelf I should only have to wait a few days to get it! In fact, I just got an email saying it's already been shipped! I'll let y'all know how things turn out!

BTW, initially I will be wearing this kilt in a fairly casual manner... no offense to the traditionalists following this thread. Set your expectations appropriately , and I will endeavor to wear it respectfully.
