What waistcoat to wear with Stewart Black tartan?

Greeting fellow kilties,

I am on the verge of buying my third kilt. I currently wear my kilts casually in informal settings (going shopping, djing, out for a night on the town). I usually pair the kilt with a t-shirt and waistcoat, hose scrunched down with a nice pair of boots. Here's a link to a shot taken by a street photographer who liked my style:

Anyway, I'm having trouble figuring out what colour waistcoat to wear with Stewart Black tartan, which is what my next kilt will be. I don't want to wear a black waistcoat as I find that a bit too much black going on. And other colours don't seem to compliment it or seem to garish (ie red, yellow). The only one I've come across that could possibly work is one I recently saw in River Island of all places.

Your thoughts and opinions would be gratefully appreciated. (Please bear in mind that I'll only be wearing this kilt in casual settings, with a t-shirt, as it's quite a pleasant Summer at the moment)

Here's my Macbeth tartan kilt that I am going to wear with my Araca Grey jacket and waistcoat for a function later on this summer

I don't know if this is a sartorial curveball but how about a denim kilt?

or even a denim waistcoat?

T Challa, I like your style. It wouldn't work for me, mind. But, is that not one of the beauties of a distinctive personal style ~ what works for some, works not with others?

I like the charcoal waistcoat with the lapel you posted. I almost always prefer my waistcoats to have lapels. I think they work particularly well if one is to forego the jacket most of the time.

Along the lines of your "River Island believe it or not" try Orvis. They have a nice range for different levels of dress (apart from formal) that do work with the kilt. What they have on offer changes and is updated regularly throughout the year, so it pays to dip in now and again to see whats on the go. They even have a denim one and I have their soft tweed ones and a finely tailored leather one which are very comfortable and stylish.

Thanks the compliment and the tip about Orvis. I'll check them out. I usually get my waistcoats from a vintage shop in Camden, but it's always nice to have options! lol

Thanks for the picture of your grey waistcoat/Macbeth tartan. Looks awesome. In my mind I thought my options would work, but seeing it together for real has definitely helped.

As for a denim kilt, personally I'm not too keen on kilts that aren't made from tartan. Nothing against them, I just prefer the tartan. Although, a denim waistcoat is definitely something to consider.

Really like the casual look. Very comfortable indeed. Also the Stewart black and waistcoat you have pictured look pretty good to me.

I like to pull the green thread up in my Stewart Black. So I'm suggesting a lovat green one. I wear a green golf shirt and hose with mine and it's casually sharp.

It seems to brighten the whole tartan which when stepping out casually is funner.

This may be a bit of a hijack but I have a similar question. I just bought a 5.11 tactical kilt in khaki. I have paired it with a green somewhat military style shirt. My wife wants me to find a vest to wear with it. Any suggestions?

Remember, in buying a vest/waistcoat that one not designed to be worn with a kilt may be a little long and interfere with the sporran. Depending on the fit of the vest and your body type, some will work. I've had to modify a couple to get the proper look.

Sorry, but I'm having trouble getting my head around these er what colour this should I wear with that threads. I f you were wearing trousers, would you even think about asking someone else the question? Much less going on a trousers forum to post about it. Take one that you thinks looks good and roll with it. Sheesh!
