6 inches in the waist is too much for kilt strap extenders. It would mean a major rebuild, likely adding some plain color fabric to the underapron so that the large underapron pleats could be converted to exterior pleats. Much money and time. . . find one that fits to start with is the typical recommendation.

I know I know but they always to small I end up looking at kilts im not that ken on just because they will fit me . Im 6ft and have just bid on a kilt with a 22" drop just because its a 36" waste and will fit me. ill just have to were it low on my hips if I get it ,.

But ive just seen a lovely Ex Military Cameron Highlanders kilt and I love the tartan and bound to be good quality as its an Ex Army one . but its usual a 32" . Ive never seen one come up for sale before and in a search I cant even fined any in that tartan just ties.

Ive just paid for, but not received a Black watch Ex Military a couple of days back that's a 36 but I can put it on a further along holl on the strap, Ive been looking for one for 3 months every single day I just got fed up of looking for my size

Agree with Sydnie7, unlikely to be economically viable. And you need to be careful with some of the small waist ex-military kilts, some don't have that large under apron pleat - mine (32) doesn't.

I feel your pain with the drop. I wear a 26.5" drop kilt. I gave up on finding any in my size and just saved up for material/made to measure.

What Price Glory sell a very good replica. I have one. It is 22 oz./yd and far to warm to wear except in very cool/cold weather.

I know others here are trying to point you in other directions, but to answer your question, it will really depend on the individual kiltmaker or alterations professional. No one here is going to be able to give you a firm amount. The cost will vary widely, depending on what they have to do and how much they charge per hour. Your best bet is to contact someone with the specifics and see what they say. I'll bet it's going to be expensive, though. Most likely more than you paid for the kilt if you bought it used.

Many good points have been brought up, and there are definitely pros and cons about whether or not it's worth it to alter a kilt.
I've done lots and lots of kilt alterations and if you PM me, I can tell you what i charge (most people say it's reasonable).
It helps a lot if the apron facings are not skimpy and if the pleat next to the aprons is nice and deep.
It takes about a day and a half of work to do.

I think its a gamble . if im paying a good price for the kilt to start with its a no go but if I get a bargain then its a gamble if they don't have that large under apron pleat, and once its got that's it your stuck with it .

May be I should just get some liposuction and get down to a 32" LOL
