Getting your Child in a kilt for the first time

Now I came across a cheep kilt at a car boot . Actually I came across 3 all very small but aduld kilts and all very old 1950's 60's may be . So I turned up the bottom of the MacLauchlan one about 6" so it would fit my lad. and put on some belt straps. It doesn't look to bad and hasn't last and weight as if I can just cut it.

Any way we went to Twin lakes park a few weeks back and a made him put it on . He wasn't happy about it but he still did it and had it on almost all day .

Frankly I think it looks better then my kilt.

He asked me to get him a house hair sporran for him as I said I was looking for 1 .
So when I got my one I got him one as well from the same person My one is stamped 1928 and I think his is a 1940 one. any way he said he liked it .

So we went out again last weekend to Matlock in Derbyshire. I asked him to put the kilt on again as I was going to have my one on . I pointed out he could put on the horse hair sporran. He was not happy about having to put on a dress as he puts it but yet again he did it and he looks great in it as well . he chinned about it again for some time threw out the morning but again when I got him no were just stopped and got on with the day.

I think its going to take some time or may be he will never like it . I was just wondering how you guys got your older kids in them. I know a lot of you have them in them from very young and its not you im thinking of its the older kids My son is 11. Do you have any advice for me . I have even told him I have a proper knife coming for him from the USA that he can have in his sock when it arrives " from X marks for sale section"

Im thinking as he knows the chinning gets him no were, the more he has it on the more he will except it. and people did quight like to see us both walking about both in kilts one woman even took our picture.

I do have a bike show In Edinburgh in Aug 9th and 10th and its a bloody long way so im making a week Holladay of it and will sleep in the van as accommodation is to expensive. I have told him every one on our UK 2 Strokes stand who has one I have asked to were a kilt. We will be out about all week and I want him to were it all that week when we go out to the zoo castles or wheat ever we do and he is happy with this .

I don't want him to think its only for this show that's why im trying to get him used to it now .

I think it is pretty natural for boys to resist the kilt if their friends do not wear one. My son loved his kilt until about a year ago, age 8. Then, it seems, he was more concerned that others wouldn't understand.

Certainly, he will get used to it. My son would have a negative result if I forced him to wear it. I show him it is not only for special events bywearing it more often (admittedly, that is not very often either). He will wear it around the house, but does not like to in town. Cool sporrans and sgians would never change his mind about the KILT in public.

I figure, as he get older he will return to wearing it more comfortably.

It might be a bit of a hike for you, but there is always the Harpenden Highland Gathering. Both of you will certainly not look out of place and he gets to go in for free as he is under 16.

Tell him he's a descendent of a secret sect of warriors from all around the world that the boy scouts is modeled after. His great, great, great grandfather is pictured here with the founding members of the sect.

He can wear the kilt and keep the sgian dubh in case of attack from ancient enemies, but he is never to reveal his secret.

    It might work.

I love that photo. It's a great starting point for a story. You can begin with it and end up almost anywhere.

When my sons were growing up, except for issues concerning their safety, I found it more productive to suggest things to them and let them make up their own minds whether they wanted to do whatever it was. Making him wear the kilt might be counter-productive in the long run, especially if he sees it presently as "girly". What's his opinion of you wearing the kilt?

Years ago (and it must be approaching 20 by now!) when I worked in Birmingham, I recall there used to be some kind of Highland Gathering in the city, (Cannon Hill Park, maybe?) but whether they still hold it, I've no idea, perhaps some of our West Midlands members know. As Chas suggested, an event where there are lots of kilts could be persuasive.

And of course, when he's a bit older and realises that a kilt is a "Girlfriend Magnet"...
