leatherneck large sett

Anyone ever seen such a beast? Would love to see how a 15" sett leatherneck would pleat up. On the double red stripes?

My original thinking was regular sett in tweed. Then I stumbled on Wilson's colors. Might look pretty good as far as a rebel teuflehunden is concerned.

I have never seen the Leatherneck tartan with an enlarged sett, or done in Wilson's colours, but I would love to! Hmmm...now I'm intrigued at such a prospect!

Or, perhaps the Leatherneck tartan done in Dalgliesh's reproduction colours? Now, there's something different. I really like it!

Wow, that is very nice. Thanks for the lead Kyle. You being a family tartan only guy; its saying allot that a special leatherneck is intriguing to you! We were in 2d Marines at the same time. 1/2 C Co.

I think leatherneck done BIG would rock.

Yes, I was with 2/2 "Warlords" during the majority of my enlistment (1999-2007). My wife and I are actually heading back to Camp Lejeune in about a week (en route to the Outer Banks for holiday) to visit some mutual friends (retired Marines) of ours that live in Jacksonville.

I agree in regards to enlarging the sett. It would definitely rock! I think I just found the tartan for my next kilt, thanks to you, brother! The U.S. Marine Corps tartan in the modern or ancient colour scheme appears too bold; almost garish in my opinion. The more subdued tonality of the reproduction colours is far more pleasing to my eye. I don't know why it took me so long to decide on a tartan (I suppose it's a decision I take quite seriously), but I'm highly confident that this will be the one - no matter the cost. And rightly so! I'm very proud of my military service and my personal accomplishments as a U.S. Marine NCO. So, why not have a kilt done up in a tartan that further exemplifies, relfects, and honours my service, as well as the U.S. Marine Corps itself?

Does that mean that I won't get my Hunting Stewart Kilt in Reproduction Colours?

It's a good choice, I can see you (Kyle) wearing this tartan.

Hahaha! I guess so, Carlo! Hunting Stewart is definitely out. As are any non-Macpherson tartans with the exception of the U.S. Marine Corps sett featured above. I WILL be pulling the trigger on this. Meantime, I will work on enlarging the sett to see how it looks. This tartan will have much of the same meaning to me as the Macpherson tartans do. It evokes a pride of belonging to something larger than yourself; it encompasses a rich tradition and history associated with its name; and possess the capability of instantly connecting/sharing camaraderie with my fellow Marines. I have made my decision, and I couldn't be happier!

One note of caution: In the weathered color scheme, the Leatherneck tartan will look very similar to Cameron Hunting Weathered-

I've often thought that the Leatherneck tartan would look very nice in the hues of the actual uniform- Dark Navy for the Blue, OD green for the green, scarlet and gold matching the colors of the enlisted dress blue rank patches. This would be very close to the Wilsons of Bannockburn colors, I think...
