I'm either going to have to wear it a bit lower, or dispense with the belt altogether. Anyone else have experience with dress sporrans or know of any rules of thumb with regards to same.?

Hi Blu,
Firstly, the "metal arch" on your sporran is known as a Cantle!
Secondly, traditionally there should be roughly 2½" to 3" between the bottom of your belt buckle and the top of your sporran - but no more than that (or you might trip over it (
) and, besides, it will look ridiculous!!) OK, when you sit there might still be contact between the two, but it's really nothing to get worried about. If it does concern you, move your sporran to one side as, or before, you sit.
Dispensing with the belt rather depends upon what other kit you are wearing. As David says, with a Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat, he does not wear a belt - which is absolutely correct. A belt should NOT be worn with a PC! See my photo at:

A belt buckle with this would spoil the clean, uncluttered line, and would be half-hidden by the waistcoat anyway.
