I had that happen to me once. Fortunately the car slid into a nice soft grassy median. It was 1979 so there were no cell phones, just a 1 mile walk to get new lug nuts. I was in the Marines and was wearing "Cammies", no kilt.
There seem to be a lot of kilt wearing Marines around. Glad you survived too, it was a bit of a heart stopping moment. I may just as well not had the phone, but at least I was able to call the Guardia Civil who were very helpful.
