Take a look at the 1 kilt 10 looks thread here:

You will notice that Jamie is wearing a Sherrifmuir Doublet in his last photo, the White tie shot, the rest of the dressier shots, under White and Black tie level, utilize the argyll jacket. There is a reason Jamie and I both wore our different argyll jackets, and that is simply because it is the most versatile kilt jacket on the market. One other thing to consider and something I caution new kilt wearers about is the dangers of mixing formalities. Like the ongoing thread on wearing diced hose with day wear I would say in most every case the best thing to do is to conform to one level of formality at a time.

I have actually gone ahead and ordered an Arran (sp?) cardigan in charcoal and a tweed vest in a nice light grey.

As for the Wallace jacket, I'm not much a fan... a bit too cosmopolitanized for my tastes. I'll probably roll with what I have on hand for now, and look into custom work when I have the money.

Good choices. And I love that word ... cosmopolitanized ... I'm going to co-opt it. :-)

I used to have a black barrathea daywear jacket made some years ago by Thomas Gordon & Sons.

It had fairly plain officers' mess style jacket sleeves, rather than 'argyll style/gauntlets' with just two buttons at the bottom of each sleeve..

At the front it had Thomas Gordon's signature chain for fastening purposes. The shoulders had a fairly slim bit of braid.

I found that it was an excellent jacket when travelling away from home, as it could be used for daywear or with black tie for evening wear.
