    Macpherson Tartan Question

    Moin Xmarkers,

I found this tartan in the register...it is named as a Macpherson tartan.

    http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=2710

Did anyone ever see this as woven fabric or kilt or does anyone know if it is in produktion at any weaver?

    Thanks for help!

    Tom

No, I have never seen this particular "Macpherson" tartan woven, or worn as a kilt. That being said, I'm sure you could certainly have it custom woven by D.C. Dalgliesh if so desired, for a hefty cost I might add. I will say that this particular "Macpherson" sett (possibly based upon the Caledonian, or Kidd sett) is not amongst the various Macpherson tartans that have been officially recognised by Cluny. That's not to say you couldn't have it woven and worn as a kilt; however, it's definitely not one of the more widely seen/recongisable Macpherson tartans worn by Macphersons today.

Be sure to raise a pint, or a wee dram in hounour of our clan tonight and throughout the weekend. The annual gathering and rally is upon us, beginning with the clan ball and dinner at the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie, taking place as we speak.

    Hello Kyle,

    thanks for your explaination.
    That's about what I thought...
But it's a nice sett anyway.

Yes, I am so sorry I couldn't join the gathering...we will be in Scotland from tuesday the 5th... too late but my girlfriend couldn't get away from work earlier.
    Maybe next year.

All the best from your german cousin!

Let me make this point as simply and strongly as I can - THERE IS NO SUCH TARTAN.

The STR entry is based on the Scottish World Tartan Register where it is claimed that The source of tartan 1666 was: Highland Society of London. We are fortunate that the original sample with the Chief's seal survives and in this case is shown in Munro's Highland Clans and Tartan.

It is absolutely clear that that tartan is an example of Wilson's 'No.43, Kidd or Caledonia' which was adopted/sealed by the chief as his own in 1816. The STWR and subsequent STR entries are therefore incorrect.

The Internet can be a good source but it's only as good as the source information: rubbish in – rubbish out!
