I know what you mean about time consuming. When I did my wedding sporran I cut a fancy profile on the cantle and it did take quite a lot of cutting, grinding and filing to get it done. One thing that might help with the layout would be to make a drill pattern template of the heart in a piece of steel. It would take out some of the measuring and make repeating consistency of the feature a little easier. Plus, once you have it you can use it on future pieces.
