I have been using a slightly modified union double breasted shell jacket as a Montrose doublet for some time now. I cut the bottom button area into a slightly angled bottom line and used the scrap to fashion epaulettes. I then replaced the eagle buttons with plain brass, added some to the cuffs and two on the back that I rounded to be more fashionable. The end result was quite decent and I have my eyes on a single breasted confederate jacket to do something similar with. Though I am currently getting ready to add a navy blue facing, gauntlet style cuff, and epaulettes to it. The idea is to make it a more formal style jacket that can be worn open and look decent.
