Another thing to keep in mind, depending on the era, historically... These hose were likely cut of cloth, not knit. This is the case for tartan and "diced."

here re is a reasonably good source for wool...

thank you Jock, I did try to politely raise a protest, see my earlier post in this thread, I too cut some slack as the OP is a newcomer, but totally agree with what you said.

Actually, I read over the OP's post and he does not come across to me as slamming the English, but wanting to have his outfit historically appropriate. He was accessing a source that is specific for a time, though.

To the OP, I would like to welcome you to the forum. One of the things you are going to discover is that a lot of what is out on the internet is not always accurate. By coming to XMarks, you will have a chance to discuss the topic with a lot of knowledgeable folks, including Jock Scot, Pleater, McMurdo, etc. But understand that this is an international forum, and written English (like all languages) is not always interpreted the way the source intended.

Now, I don't know much about hose, but I am sure the good-natured members of the forum will be able to point you in the right direction.

I think that Harper was talking from an historical angle in that as an re-enactor he would not want to look like an Englishman when portraying a Scotsman around the time of Culloden. I doubt that he was denigrating the English of today.

Why is it that so many still do not know that more Scots fought on the BRITISH side at Culloden than fought for B.P.C.? Whether people of today like it or not, the Pretender was not universally liked in Scotland.

What you say is true Jock. I am fully aware of that but I would expect that a re-enactor would probably, but not necessarily, take the part of a Scotsman fighting for the Pretender, if in fact he was portraying this battle and not one of a prior date.

I think this is part of the modern belief/attitude that Jacobite vs. Crown lines were built in Nationalism rather than the reality that it was a based on deeper Political and Religious reasons. As a reenactor, although history is at the basis of what we do, I still see a lot of modern attitude, nationalism, and confusion in the hobby. This especially applies to things Scottish (more than other nationalities with only the exception of Irish).

    Welcome Harper,

Sometimes people get confused about where to post questions and sometimes responses get confused, too. Since you posted in the Kilt Advice forum, you may have gotten more modern advice than you hoped for, even though you specifically mentioned HISTORICAL HOSE in your subject line.

There is also a Historically Made Kilts forum, which might get you slightly more technical information and slightly less off-topic static.

It is difficult for me to advise you about forum etiquette without seeming to tell you what to do or to correct you,( which I see as a breach of forum etiquette,) but I do hope you will remember that people here are generally interested in being helpful and are handicapped by the same structural flaws of the internet as everyone else- there is no tone of voice on the internet and many printed phrases and sentences can be taken more than one way. Given a choice, I try to interpret anything here as proceeding from good will and an acute sense of propriety. I look forward to seeing more posts from you, wherever you choose to put them.
