Border Collie Sees Sheep For First Time

She seems a natural. I once saw a young pup of two years in age try to herd children at a park (my son of three was one of them). The lad that owned the dog apologized and explained to the frightened parents. My son and I wanted to see more. The young pup was also good at tackling when my son took off in a run.

I have worked hard to keep Izzy away from children because most parents don't understand herding dogs and their behavior. In fact, the years of suppressing the herding behavior (scolding her for nipping the neighbor, or herding the cat, or grabbing one of our other dogs, etc.) was her biggest hurdle when facing those sheep. She kept checking back with me to make sure she wasn't in trouble. She was getting more comfortable with it by the end of our session.

That fine line between working class dogs and social pets is tough. She is a fine animal and if your going to work/show her, she will adjust fast I believe. Then you can compete without as much movement and we can study your kit better.

Looks like a great start! We've two border collies, but never had them trained formally. They certainly are intelligent animals though.
