Skye Highland Games 1961
Yes I know I'm 53 years late in posting this, but I came across this film on the Scotland on Screen website and 2 minutes in there is a sequence on the Skye games from 1961. There are a couple of interesting points to note in it, but I thought the best related to the actual games participants. Two men are seen throwing the hammer. They look like a couple of guys who have been passing by, slipped off their jackets and ties and had a go at throwing the hammer for a laugh. No fancy foot wear just a pair of stout brogues, one thrower does tuck his trousers into his socks though.

My notes:
1) I saw five pairs of cream hose and I bet they didn't come from a kilt hire shop!
2) Film is so much better than video.

Nice couple of clips. The piobaireachd being played at 2:30 is 'Lament for Mary MacLeod'.

Very interesting film, David!
Just glad you found it to share - it's a window into the life of those on the Island of Sky in 1961. So many wearing kilts just because it was a special day.
Would love to see a similar film done now to see the changes - the group of children in the kilts who were so proud to be drinking a soft drink would probably not want to drink one now, just a cuppa would be wonderful!
(I dislike the autocorrect trying to 'help'...)

Great vid, thanks for posting. You can almost feel the totally relaxed atmosphere of the games. I like the way the spectators are using the rock outcrops for seating. The scenery on Skye is sublime. I`m wondering how they got Hugh Grant for the starring role?
