What dram is in your quaich?

LOL well we do have some fine Scotch down here in Costa Rica, but I have to admit that I have taken to what is called Cacique or what the local term "Quatro blumen" - four flowers. This is basically Costa Rican moonshine and the age... what, 2-3 weeks old.



We actually have some good Scotch down here, but I forget the name of it right now.

Just got my bottle of The Glenlivet's Guardian Chapter single malt scotch. Excellent scotch!

I've been enjoying the bottle of Glen Elgin 12 year-old I brought back from my recent sojourn in Scotland. I first tasted this mellow Speyside single malt in the early 1980s at the Lord Elgin hotel across the road from the national war memorial in downtown Ottawa. Until it was renovated in the 1990s, the Lord Elgin used to have a real and very nice scotch bar: a great selection of single malts, which were the bar's raison d'être, plus big leather club chairs, wood panelling on the walls, a respectful silence in which to enjoy your dram and have a quiet conversation, and a real grand piano tinkling quietly in the corner in the evenings; it was very much like an old-time gentlemen's club, but was, of course, open to ladies. The hotel used to import Glen Elgin exclusively for sale in its scotch bar, and was the only place in Canada where you could find it, since it is not normally exported to this country. Alas, when the hotel was renovated, the scotch bar was done away with and replaced by a conference room and a typical hotel-lobby bar, a chrome and glass monstrosity with an intrusive pop-music background noise. At the same time, they replaced their great selection of malts with the usual bar scotches. What I especially missed, though, was the elderly French-Canadian barman who loved his malts and would talk about them enthusiastically and very knowledgeably when asked for a recommendation.

That is a sad story indeed, but I`m glad you were able to go to Scotland to pick up a bottle of your old favorite.

Tonight while waiting for a carry-out order from our local Thai restaurant I walked next door to the beverage store and picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. A very smooth dram.

Sir, how does that compare with the standard Glenmorangie? I have only had the bottle with the Yellow label, 12 year I think.

Have been sampling some generous drams of Speyburn Bradan Orach lately. An excellent (perhaps the best) every day/mixable "introductory" single malt and very affordable here in the USA Midwest, highly recommended for that type of consumption. Sláinte!

I also picked up a bottle of Oban and one of Laphroaig for later on when the cold winter winds begin to blow.
