Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs
I have some questions about the “Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs” (SCSC).
Does it represent the interests of all Scottish clans? Do most clan chiefs belong?
The Chiefs of at least 8 Clans (Carnegie, Fergusson, Haig, Lindsay, Maxwell, Menzies, Murray, Ruthven) are listed as having asked to be removed from the council. Why is this? Is it a controversial group?
Just curious.

Not sure, mate. I do know that my chief, Sir William Alan Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie, TD, has been an active member for quite some time. Perhaps you can send an email to the SCSC asking them this.
Cheers,

The last chief of Clan Maxwell, William Maxwell of Carruchan, died in 1863.

From the website http://www.clanchiefs.org.uk: "The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs is the definitive and authoritative body for information on the Scottish Clan System. Within the site you will find information relating to the Standing Council, as well as links to other relevant resources, together with additional information on the Clan system. " There is a list of clan chiefs or representatives.

My comment was because if there is no clan chief then he can not ask to be removed. J

Perhaps, it may have been over the cancellation of The Gathering 2014 and Clans 2014. The council counts on these two major events to keep the international clans connected and they draw loads of tourists. Quite possibly, there may have been some disagreement among the chiefs.
The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs is the preeminent organization, but there is also the Council of Scottish Armigerous Clans and Families.

Good questions, Steven. Most Scottish chiefs recognised as such by Lord Lyon belong to the Standing Council. Members are the hereditary heads of named clans or families and joining or removing oneself from the Council is an individual decision. In addition to the eight you list there are a number who, for whatever reason (age, infirmity, finance, politics, etc.), have chosen not to join over the years. It is important to understand that this is a Council of chiefs and not one of clan or family associations.
