I tend to doubt Jerry knowingly uses child labor. If you compare the wool in Stillwater kilts to that from Scottish mills up close, you can see and feel the difference. SWK wool is a bit rougher and looser. That said, from a few feet away, few can see the difference. I have noticed that what sizes he has in which tartans on his website varies. I suspect they are made up in bulk, and shipped to the US that way, with volume making or considerable economy of scale. Jerry sells what is in stock, and updates the availability frequently. If he runs out of a size in a given tartan, you are sol until the next shipment comes in.

I started out with a Stillwater kilt (one of their "standard" Blackwatch models). I think they're a great option for a new kilt wearer who is "testing the waters" so to speak. Even though I've since acquired better quality, made to measure kilts, my old Blackwatch still sees some use. In fact I recently bought another Stillwater "standard" kilt. The Honor Guard for the Maine Police Emerald Society wears kilts in the Irish National tartan and since we only have occasion to wear them a few times a year the Stillwater kilts are a great way to outfit yourself without breaking the bank.

Yes they're Pakastani made, acrylic, off-the-rack kilts, but for the money they can't be beat and Jerry's customer service is first rate!

To be honest, I was put off by the person who brought up child labor. I have been very happy with Stillwater Kilts being a new kilt wearer. I was impressed that he had it shipped out and also answered email in a prompt manner.

Being a kilt community we need to support the few kilt stores that we have in the world and especially those who are able to sell affordable kilts to newbies like me who does not have $300 to drop on a first time kilt.

The post with the child labor should have been deleted due to political views, seeing that this forum is very hard in applying the rules. It was a personal dig at a company that personally is unfounded and could possibly damage the good name of a forum sponsor.

My two cents.

I'd like to say that I'm writing this wearing a PV kilt that was probably made in Pakistan/China/some low-wage land. Also, I know nothing of the processes used in the manufacture of the Stillwater kilts and make no claims about them either.

Child labour and overall conditions for the global workforce should concern us all. Last year over 1000 people died and over 2000 were injured in Bangladesh when a building collapsed and as far as I know they were all working in the rag trade. To put it into perspective for UK/USA readers, that's about four Lockerbie air disasters or one of the twin towers on September 11th.

If the Hypothetical Kilt Company makes cheap kilts using slave labour and manufacturing processes making use of toxic chemicals (some of which can be found in the end product) should we as a community support them due to the affordability of the kilts?

There may be people here who can shed some light on how our kilts are manufactured so we can make our own decisions. Not discussing it would mean we'd be reaching conclusions based upon hearsay and fantasy. I know I'd like to know more.

I have several of Stillwater's Heavy Weight Wool Kilts, and they are great for the price.

I did alter it by removing the excess pleat material over the kidney area, stitching them down, and sewing in a proper interfacing as is done with bespoke kilts. This removes the bulkiness from that area, and negates the only real compromise in the construction.

Superb value for money with these. I'm not sure just what is different with the less expensive Economy Wool model as I don't own one of those.

I thought I'd made it clear I was referring to the cheapness of things from the Indian sub continent in general, not that this company knowingly used it.
