I've worn sporran, with no belt, on several occasions. I find that I'll do so, most typically, with my "casual cut" kilts, which are designed to sit at the pants waist. With my traditionally cut (natural waist) kilts, I tend to wear a belt, as Artificer says, for the way it "lends a more finished look."

Here's the only shot I have at the moment, sans belt. This is a Scotweb 5 yd "Casual" in Aberdeen District, taken while I was attending Herding Dog Trials at my friend's sheep farm. I think it works fine without a belt. (I did need to tighten up the strap to raise the sporran though, as you can see it sits too low at the time the shot was taken.)

I almost never wear a belt! Nothing improper about wearing your sporran without a belt at all.

Hi Rob, a warm Scottish welcome from middle England. Although I have both black and brown kilt belts to match with shoes and sporran I very rarely wear them on a casual basis. I may wear a normal belt to carry a camera or bum bag, especially around the house with no sporran, when I go out it is most usually just sporran and kilt. In this part of the world if it is warm, I'll be wearing a lose t-shirt and if it is colder a jumper of some sort, both of which would conceal a belt, so there is no point. I have been known to wear a kilt belt with open waistcoat and shirt, but if the waistcoat is buttoned, again there is little point in a belt unless it is needed to hold your kilt up. If that is the case your kilt is too big.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Same as said. Wore a pullover today, no belt. I tend to with a tucked-in shirt but the buckle is very plain.

Even a kilt without a sporran is ok. Just wonder where you'd put your essential stuff.

You only need a belt if you have a dirk to hang from it.

A properly sized and fitted phillabeg (half kilt or "small" kilt) with adjustable side waist straps does not--and should not--require a belt, and can be comfortably--and confidently--worn without a kilt belt, which, in turn, also means that it a sporran with a sporran belt can be worn with it with or without a kilt belt. I personally do not like the look of a phillabeg with an exposed top waist line without a kilt belt, but if the top waist line is covered--by either a sweater/jumper or vest/waistcoat--then the kilt belt can and/or should be omitted, and a sporran and sporran belt alone will, on most wearers, look quite trim, neat, flattering and smart.
    Best Regards,
