Found possible material for a great kilt

Here is another fabric that I am looking at, a medium cotton.

Brown, forest green, gold and black plaid. Medium weight cotton fabric with a very crisp hand.

Let me know if this would make a good home sewn kilt and how many yards would I need? I figure that material like the cargo shorts I wear would make a good everyday kilt.

Has anyone done business with GK? How hard is it to buy from them from the US?

The P/V Gordon tartan shown in the GK remnants collection is 11 ounce Marton Mills fabric, just like the P/V used in kilts by USA Kilts, Freedom Kilts and others. It ought to be fine for a great kilt, or for use by modern kilt makers. The prices at the GK site are Canadian dollars, which means the cost of the tartan would be less in US dollars. There would be no duty charged. Doing business with Canada is just like doing business with a US firm. You have the option of using PayPal.

If you don't mind my saying, I like my great kilts to have a bit of color to them. I like people to be able to tell it's tartan/check at a distance. I mean the ones you listed originally are nice, but if someone were far off and looking at you, it just wouldn't stand out. I like the cotton that you mentioned. I gave the site a look through shortly after your first post and was considering finding a project for that one myself. it's understated, but still has a noticeable pattern. I have been browsing around for another great kilt for non-reenactment use. You know, the kind where authenticity isn't an issue. As to the crispness of the pleats: when putting on the great kilt in a historical fashion, the pleats aren't even pressed; so I don't see the issue.
