Actually, kiltedtom, Billy the Bastard never claimed to have conquered any land. It was others who referred to him that way. He steadfastly refused to be addressed as William the Conqueror, and is known to have tolerated being referred to as William the Bastard in Parliament.

tripleblessed, Edward did have stone castles built across the land for better control of his realm, but he was really only following the example set by William I, who had castles with wooden walls erected for the same purpose. It was a strategy he had used in Normandy, and in fact many of the men who crossed over to England with him had been hired specifically for their ability to build and command such castles. A good many of the men he hired in this way weren’t even Normans; a considerable number of them were Flemings.
Others who accompanied William to England, or followed him there, were Bretons. Many or most of these Bretons were descendants of Britons who had fled to Brittany at the time of the Anglo-Saxon invasion. They now settled in England because, with William on the throne, it was at last safe for them to live there. One Breton family, who had served as stewards of the castle of Dol for generations, moved first to England and afterwards to Scotland. In the lands where English was spoken, they adopted the surname Stewart.
    Regards,
    Mike

Thanks to Fr Bill for that earlier post making the clear distinction between membership in a Clan and membership in a Clan Association/Society.

Here in the USA people aware of their Scottish descent who are members of these Associations often use the term "Clan membership" imprecisely. I've been guilty of it myself, when I referred to myself as formerly being "a card-carrying member of Clan Donald". This statement was quickly and rightly jumped on by various Scots. Of course I was fully aware that my membership was in an American club, Clan Donald USA. I paid the dues and got the newsletter and attended events. I also knew that membership in the club didn't confer DNA. Nevertheless I fell into using conventional language, which one can hear at any local Highland Games, about "joining my clan" and "being a member of my clan".

My wife is a member of Ross and as her husband and a piper, I am welcome as a member as well. I wear the Ross Weathered Hunting in her honor and in honor of her deceased mother who was born a Corbett and thus is under the sept of Ross...according to their list of surnames.
