I have both white and brown examples of this type and have worn casually to add a touch of style, and semi-formally as well, so yes, I'd happily wear as 'daywear'.
Spot on, Martin. As much as I like them, it's a bit difficult to decide when/where to wear them since they're typically neither formal nor informal. Nevertheless, with the right combination of other items, they really are quite distinctive and the definitive finishing touch, and--like so many other aspects of Highland Dress-- therein lies the pleasant challenge of wearing them.
