For $500 here in the USA, one can get a kilt with nicely handstitched pleats, reverse pleat, full canvas lining, stabiliser, and all the other attributes of a traditional kilt.

Unfortunately when ordering from Spain, not only is the postage extortionate, but so are the taxes levied by the Spanish government.

Got curious and did some browsing in some web sites of sellers in EU:
- Buyakilt 5 yd custom made Welsh National Ancient 13oz = £279.50
- Scotweb casual Welsh National (Modern Colours) 13oz = £215.44
- Paul Henry: Traditionally styled 5 yard kilts in 16 oz tartan from £295
I do not have any experiences of those listed but they should have VAT included in EU, no customs to be added.

The prices you quote may not include VAT, but I can only get Powell of Wales tartan from Wales Tartan Centres. They offer them at Celtic Croft in the US, but I imagine they buy them in already made from Swansea. I must check though. Thanks for your research though. I have come to the conclusion that a cheap PV kilt is a better option.

Well, those prises include VAT.
You can get the kilt also in Powell of Wales tartan from Scotweb. The price looks to be £307.72 (VAT inclusive). There is a mentioning of 8 metres minimum and if I interpret it right you have to pay for that extra 3.4 metres (£140.25 + VAT) if you buy only one kilt. So a bit more than £300...
This Powell of Wales tartan can be found on Scotwebs pages too: http://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartan?filt...owell+of+Wales so I think it is not needed to buy it outside EU. Again more than £300 for only the tartan (min 8 metres £396 inclusive VAT).
For me this has been just curiosity if it really is that one has to buy everything from over the Atlantic. Most of which have originally been made in EU (or UK).

No I contacted Scotweb a few days ago and they told me they couldn't get the tartan I wanted. I think Wales Tartan Centres has an exclusive deal with them, an independent kiltmaker told me the same. I don't know why the tartans are on their website. The cloth sells at £48 a meter excluding VAT from Wales Tartan Centres, so the Scotweb prices wouldn't reflect that.

Interesting. Having read of Scotwebs problems(?) in answering to their customers in an other thread here. Maybe @Nick_Fiddes might want to tell why they do not sell you something that is clearly for sale on their web page.
