    Yes Matt's articles are wonderful, and here on XMarks you will get a breadth of knowledge you won't get, probably, anywhere else.

    As far as books go, my all-time favourite is

    Old Irish & Highland Dress

    Dundalk


    No other book I've come across comes close.

    What I love about this book is the clear-eyed examination of all the available sources of evidence (in a field cluttered with more mythology than scholarship).

    Also critical is this book's view of Highland Dress as part of a larger shared Gaelic tradition spanning both Ireland and The Highlands.

    It was a bit pricey but it's one of my most-cherished books.

    About Drum Major manuals, they always seem to have things which fly in the face of the traditions of the kilted Scottish regiments, which form MY idea of the way military Highland Dress should be worn.
