A large US based dept. store chain with huge buying power. The stores are large, one floor (usually), well lit and anywhere from 3/4 to 1 acre in floor area, selling just about everything... clothing, sporting goods, groceries, pharmaceuticals, toys, shoes, hardware and paint, music and movies, housewares, eyeglasses, flowers, automotive and tires,etc. etc. you get the idea. I don't think they sell real estate (yet). Founded in the US earlier this century by one Sam Walton who called his store Walton Market (hence Wal Mart). They've been operating in Canada for 10 years. The stores tend to be shunned by those folks who dislike there presence in smaller communities. They can have the unfortunate effect of out-competing small mum & dad shops.
